*The original version of this recipe is from my oh-so-charming ex. Some of his notes are included for your entertainment (and mine).

Important notes:
  1. For me, this is a full week’s worth of breakfasts. Make it once and you’ll have happy, healthy breakfasts all week long!
  2. This is NOT a set-it-and-forget-it recipe. If you don’t want your oatmeal to stick to the bottom of the pan, keep stirring.

You will need:
  • Organic fresh or frozen blueberries (about 1 cup, drained & rinsed)
  • Organic fresh Granny Smith apple(s) (1 apple, cubed). Really, why bother with any other type of apple?
  • Lots of ground cinnamon (about 1 TABLEspoon). This is NOT a typo.
  • Add later: Organic fresh strawberries (sliced), raspberries +/or banana (sliced)

My go-to brands/types of oats is in order of preference, since "you can't always get what you want..." This is an oatmeal recipe so the oats themselves are a key ingredient.
  1. *Camille’s favorite: Coach’s Oats Cracked n’Toasted
  2. Trader Joes’ Steel Cut Organic 30-oz
  3. 365 Everyday Value Organic Steel Cut
  4. Bob’s Mill Steel Cut Oats
In any case, whichever you end up using: 6 cups water + 1 1/2 cups steel cut oats.

(Footnote: never ever buy quick oats. Pronto cook time es no bueno for todos oatmelios.)

Bring your water to boil on high. Once roiling, slowly stir oats into boiling water and let 'em cook for 5 minutes like that, stirring all along. Reduce heat to low and add your blueberries.

Keep stirring 4 minutes.

By this point, your oats should be pretty close to done, so dump your cubed apples into the oatmeal pot & set the timer for 2-3 more minutes on low. This'll give it a little time to start cooking the fruit.

Once you’ve added the blueberries and apples, immediately dump a HUMONGOUS amount of ground cinnamon onto the oatmeal & fruit. Cover the entire surface of it, about ¼ inch thick, like some horrible, man-made disaster on the ocean, then slowly stir/work it into the gruel. Don't go too fast, or it will kick-up a cinnamon dust devil in your face and you'll then find yourself an unwitting participant in another Tik Tok "Cinnamon Challenge." BTW, if at any point you think you've put too much cinnamon in it, you haven't.

It's DONE and you can now drop the banana & fresh Strawbs after you've spooned some into your bowl, as their brazen rawness makes a nice cool contrast to the now "cooked" blueberries and apples.

Spoon out your individual bowl of lumpy brown bliss, drop in your fresh cut strawbs & bananas (or raspberries), close your eyes, and remember that there actually was something redeeming about me after all.

Give the remainder of your giant batch of gruel 10-15 minutes to cool off before spooning into a nice big food-saving vessel for enjoyment over the following days, simply by nuking a chilled portion for 1 1/2 minutes.

Before eating, prepare as you would usually. Add a dab of butter or a splash of milk or…

🖤 Enjoy!
