When connecting with others, it’s tempting to show up with what we have to say about out purpose and passion, our products and services… And the most successful people know that asking questions and listening to answers creates long-term connections for more win-win relationships.

Some good questions to use, that work with people you’ve known for years as well as those you are just meeting:
  1. What are your goals?
  2. What keeps you up at night?
  3. What are your priorities now?
  4. What would help you most right now?
  5. Do you have any new projects in the works?
Listen to their answers and respond from there. Do you know someone else who can help? Will one of your products/services support them?

Remember that when someone always has the “fix” to everything for everyone, it’s easy for others to be skeptical. We tend to believe someone who is more focused on what they (their product/service) does best instead of the person who is trying to fix everything/everyone.

One of my favorite classic movies truly highlights this key concept. In  “Miracle on 34th Street,” Kris Kringle starts telling customers where they can get what they want: https://youtu.be/lKfBUUhFueI. And it wins them more fans who keep coming back!
