But from a patient’s perspective? They’re entirely different.
One practitioner was male, the other female. That alone can influence a client’s comfort level, especially when working with personal or sensitive health concerns.
Their treatment environments also offered unique experiences. One office was more clinical, with white walls and charts that reminded me of a traditional medical setting. The other had the ambiance of a spa—muted colors, soft lighting, and calming artwork.
Both provided excellent care. I would absolutely go back to both. And I’d confidently refer people to both—depending on their personality, preferences, and needs.
The truth is: they’re not competing with each other. And neither are you.
As holistic professionals, we each bring something unique to the table. Our training, personality, life experience, communication style, and healing philosophy all influence how we work with clients—and who resonates with us.
Collaborate Instead of Compete
This is why creating a referral culture within the holistic community is so important. When we collaborate instead of compete, we uplift the entire profession and better serve those who are seeking holistic care.
Your fellow practitioners aren’t your rivals. The real “competition” is the system that funnels people into conventional quick fixes instead of empowering them with whole-person solutions. You're not fighting with the massage therapist down the street or the other chiropractor in your city. You're offering an alternative to painkillers, processed foods, and stress-inducing lifestyles.
Ways in which we are "similar but different" from the client POV: location, education, years of experience, technique specialties, gender, age, communication style, physical environment, and other more personal elements.
Keeping Clients Inside the Holistic Ecosystem
And sometimes, you're not the right fit for every client. That’s not a failure—it’s an opportunity. When you can say, “I know someone who might be just what you need,” you’re not only showing integrity—you’re keeping that person inside the holistic ecosystem instead of sending them back to old habits that haven’t worked.
This is how we build trust. This is how we grow the movement.
Choosing with Confidence
For consumers, this culture of referrals works in your favor, too. When holistic professionals recommend one another, it’s not about competition — it’s about collaboration. Instead of feeling lost in a sea of similar websites and wellness options, you get introduced to trusted providers who have already been “pre-screened” by someone you know. That way, you can feel confident you’re choosing a practitioner who is respected within the holistic community, not just someone with a good marketing budget.
