This year, cancer hit too close to home... again.

Twenty years ago, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a double mastectomy and moved forward with no chemo or radiation. For her, it was a good move and she has been cancer-free ever since.

This year, according to the American Cancer Society, about 340,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among US women, and more than 43,000 women will die from it. Two of my closest friends are among those who were diagnosed, and it's Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The risks for contracting breast cancer include family history and genetics, and smoking, lack of exercise and nutrition choices. While none of us have control over our family history and genetics, the other major factors can be impacted by choices we make.

“Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide and many of us have been personally affected by it in our own lives. While the field of nutrition research for cancer is still evolving, we do know that by choosing the healthiest lifestyle options possible, you can lower your risk for cancer. We developed our Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) Nutrition for Cancer Prevention Masterclass to provide evidence-based strategies to empower you and your clients/patients to make sure your breast cancer risk is as low as possible.   In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, we’re delighted to partner with the HCC to make this online course more widely available to those that can make the most impact in preventing and managing a cancer diagnosis through your important work as holistic health professionals.”

We can all make healthier food choices by learning what foods are best and, one day at a time, choosing to eat with long-term health in mind. Likewise, we can add exercise to our busy schedules by adding a short walk (or parking further from the front door) and/or stretching at the beginning or end of the day. In terms of health and wellness, every action you take adds up to a higher quality of life.
